Imam Challenges Demolition Notice

The Imam of the Sunehri Bagh mosque has filed a petition with the Delhi High Court opposing the proposed demolition of the historic structure, citing concerns about alleged traffic congestion in the vicinity. Abdul Aziz, the petitioner, contested a public notice issued by the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) on December 24, which solicited objections and suggestions from the public by January 1 regarding the demolition of the mosque. The court has scheduled a hearing for January 8 and assured that no action will be taken in the interim. The final decision on the demolition rests with the Heritage Conservation Committee (HCC), according to the NDMC’s counsel. The petitioner emphasized the historical significance of the mosque, stating that it is more than 150 years old and represents a cultural legacy. The plea argued that alleged traffic issues were caused by government offices in the area, not the mosque. The petition also highlighted that the Imam, as a witness to the traffic conditions, has not raised complaints about the regulation and barricades when needed. It’s noteworthy that on December 18, the High Court concluded proceedings in a separate petition by the Delhi Waqf Board, anticipating the mosque’s demolition, recording that all parties would act in accordance with the law.
