NEPRA Approves Hike in Electricity Tariff

NNP Report: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) approved, on Wednesday, K-Electric’s request to increase the power tariff for Karachi by Rs 2.87 per unit. This approval is part of the quarterly fuel adjustment, marking the second time in the fiscal year.
With this increase, the burden on Karachi power consumers due to quarterly fuel adjustments will accumulate to Rs 4.12. The approved hike is applicable for the adjustment period from January to March 2023.
NEPRA has forwarded the decision to the federal government for notification. Previously, at the request of the caretaker government, NEPRA had approved a tariff hike to maintain uniform electricity tariffs across the country.
The approved surge was Rs 1.72 per unit for K-Electric (KE) consumers, covering the third quarterly adjustment charges for the previous financial year. Additionally, a rise of Rs 1.25 per unit was approved for the adjustment period from January to March 2023, and Rs 0.47 per unit was sanctioned for the adjustment period from October to December 2022.
The official notification of the electric tariff hike has been sent to the federal government by NEPRA. As a result, electricity consumers in Karachi will incur additional charges in their bills from January to March 2024.
