KARACHI (NNP) —
The road accidents in Karachi have reached dangerous proportions, claiming over 680 lives and injuring more than 10,200 people during the first 290 days of 2025, according to police and rescue data.
Two more deadly road accidents in Karachi were reported last night in Liaquatabad and Model Colony, where victims included a father of twin children and brother to eight sisters — symbolizing the human tragedy behind the city’s worsening traffic crisis.
Heavy Vehicles Cause Most Fatal Road Accidents in Karachi
Authorities revealed that heavy vehicles such as trucks, dumpers, and tankers were responsible for 201 deaths this year.
A category-wise breakdown shows:
- Buses: 25 deaths
- Minibuses: 11 deaths
- Coaches: 6 deaths
- Trailers: 78 deaths
- Mazda trucks: 18 deaths
- Dumpers: 36 deaths
- Water tankers: 45 deaths
- Oil tankers: 6 deaths
Among the victims were 527 men, 71 women, and 82 children, highlighting the widespread impact of road accidents in Karachi on families across all age groups.

Motorcyclists and Pedestrians at Highest Risk
Police reports show that motorcyclists make up the majority of road accident victims, followed by pedestrians and passengers in other vehicles.
Officials attribute most road accidents in Karachi to reckless driving, lack of helmets, night-time heavy traffic, and untrained drivers operating without lights.
“Despite continuous awareness campaigns, enforcement challenges persist due to Karachi’s expanding population and poor road infrastructure,” a senior traffic officer stated.
Experts Call for Traffic Law Reforms
Rescue and traffic officials have urged immediate reforms, including:
- Mandatory vehicle fitness certification
- Stricter licensing exams
- Limitations on heavy vehicle operations at night
- Public awareness campaigns on road safety
Urban experts say unplanned city expansion, weak coordination between departments, and inadequate public transport have worsened road accidents in Karachi.
