Interest Rates Should Not Rise Amid Gulf Tensions, Says NKATI President

Interest Rates Should Remain Stable Amid Gulf Tensions

KARACHI (Commerce Reporter): President of the North Karachi Association of Trade and Industry (NKATI), Faisal Moez Khan, has urged the government and the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) not to increase interest rates in the upcoming monetary policy, citing potential economic repercussions from rising tensions in the Gulf region.

Faisal Moez Khan said an increase in interest rates could adversely affect business activities, industrial production and exports. He stressed that the evolving regional situation required a timely assessment of its potential impact on Pakistan’s economy and measures to help maintain the continuity of commercial and industrial operations.

He expressed concern over the possible effects of escalating Gulf tensions on energy prices, import costs, industrial output and national exports. According to him, policymakers should consider these risks while making monetary and economic decisions.

Interest Rates and Their Impact on Business Activity

Faisal Moez Khan said raising interest rates could place additional pressure on businesses already dealing with high energy costs and rising operating expenses. He warned that such a move could affect industrial activity and make it more difficult for businesses to remain competitive in international markets.

The NKATI president emphasised that a stable and supportive business environment was important for sustaining industrial production and export performance. He urged the government and the central bank to consider the difficulties faced by industrial and trade sectors before making decisions under the upcoming monetary policy.

He also highlighted the need to ensure continuity in business activities amid uncertainty surrounding the regional situation. According to Khan, timely and coordinated decisions could help businesses manage external economic pressures and maintain their operations.

Gulf Tensions Could Increase Energy and Import Costs

The NKATI president pointed out that Pakistan’s economy is influenced by energy availability, imported fuel prices and global trade conditions.

He said prolonged tensions in the Gulf region could lead to fluctuations in international oil prices, freight charges and supply chains. Such developments could increase industrial production costs and create uncertainty for businesses planning their operations.

Khan stressed that the potential economic consequences of regional tensions should be assessed carefully. Rising costs across energy and transportation, combined with disruptions to supply chains, could place further pressure on industries and affect their ability to compete in export markets.

He said effective measures were necessary to help ensure that businesses could continue operating despite external uncertainties. In his view, economic planning should take into account the possible effects of developments in the Gulf on Pakistan’s industrial and trade sectors.

NKATI Calls for Support for Industrial Production and Exports

Faisal Moez Khan said the industrial sector was already facing several challenges, including high energy costs, increasing operating expenses and intense competition in international markets.

He urged the government to consult industrialists and trade representatives to assess potential economic risks and formulate policies that protect production activities, employment and exports.

The NKATI president emphasised that the needs of the industrial sector should receive due attention in economic decision-making. He said supporting business activity and reducing the difficulties faced by industrial enterprises were important for sustaining production and improving export capacity.

Khan also highlighted the importance of cooperation between government departments and industrial organisations. He said closer coordination could help identify practical solutions to business problems, reduce production costs and promote commercial activity.

Energy Planning Needed to Address Economic Risks

Faisal Moez Khan stressed the importance of advance planning for energy supplies, import requirements and alternative energy sources in response to the changing regional situation.

He said efficient energy use and the promotion of renewable energy could help mitigate the effects of external economic shocks. He also emphasised that industrial enterprises should receive the necessary facilities to continue production and manage energy-related challenges.

According to Khan, careful planning for energy requirements and imports could help businesses and policymakers prepare for possible disruptions. He maintained that the potential effects of developments in the Gulf should be considered when assessing Pakistan’s economic requirements.

The NKATI president said these measures should be supported by policies that recognise the operational needs of industrial enterprises and encourage the continuity of production and trade.

Government and Business Community Urged to Coordinate

Khan said close coordination between the government and the business community was particularly important under the prevailing circumstances.

He emphasised that consistency in economic policies and business-friendly measures could help maintain confidence among industrialists and traders. He added that decisions addressing the needs of the industrial sector would be important in supporting economic activity and creating opportunities to increase exports.

He also called for stronger cooperation between relevant government departments and industrial organisations to resolve outstanding business issues. According to him, constructive engagement with trade and industry representatives could help policymakers understand the challenges faced by businesses and identify appropriate responses.

Khan stressed that maintaining a favourable environment for industry was essential for Pakistan’s economy, particularly when regional developments could create additional pressure on production costs and international trade.

Gulf Situation Requires Economic and Diplomatic Attention

The NKATI president said the situation in the Gulf region should not be viewed solely as a foreign policy issue, as it could also have significant economic implications for Pakistan.

He called for timely assessments, effective diplomatic efforts, better energy management and appropriate support for industry and trade to help the country withstand potential economic pressures arising from regional tensions.

Khan reiterated his position that the government and the State Bank of Pakistan should avoid increasing interest rates in the upcoming monetary policy, given the potential consequences for business activities, industrial production and exports.

His remarks highlighted the importance of considering regional economic risks, maintaining policy consistency and supporting the industrial sector as Pakistan responds to uncertainty in the global trading environment.
