Imran Khan’s Jail Conditions Presented Before Supreme Court
A seven-page report outlining the prison facilities available to PTI founder Imran Khan at Adiala Jail was submitted to the Supreme Court on Wednesday by Advocate Salman Safdar. The lawyer, appointed as amicus curiae, inspected the former prime minister’s living arrangements amid concerns raised by his party regarding his treatment.
After filing the report, Safdar confirmed meeting Imran Khan and reviewing his cell but declined to publicly disclose specific details at that time. However, the document highlights his daily routine, amenities, hygiene conditions, and security measures inside the prison.
Daily Routine and Diet Plan
According to the report, Imran Khan follows a structured routine that differs between summer and winter seasons. His day typically begins around 9:45am with breakfast, which includes coffee, porridge, and dates. Later in the morning, he spends approximately an hour reciting the Holy Qur’an.
He also performs physical exercise using limited equipment available in his cell, including an exercise bike, light weights, and a bar. Around early afternoon, he is allowed to shower and access a secure strolling area for walking or sitting.
Lunch is taken between 3:30pm and 4pm under a meal plan chosen by him and financed by his family. The weekly plan includes chicken, meat, lentils, and snacks on different days. In the evening, he is granted another short walk before remaining inside his cell overnight. For dinner, he reportedly consumes light items such as fruit, milk, and dates. Bottled drinking water is provided.
Cell Facilities and Cleanliness
The report notes that his cell contains basic furniture, including a bed, table, chair, and storage hanger. Lighting and ventilation were described as adequate. Bedding consists of a mattress, pillows, and blankets.
A washroom is attached to the cell, separated by a partition wall, with access to hot and cold water. While overall cleanliness was found satisfactory, the report observed that sanitation conditions in the toilet area could be improved. An exhaust system is not installed despite the presence of ventilation openings.
A prison labourer has been assigned to assist with cleaning duties and washing. The report mentions that Imran Khan expressed satisfaction with hygiene arrangements. Personal belongings in the cell include prayer items, toiletries, and around 100 books.
Seasonal Challenges and Amenities
During winter, a small heater is provided along with continuous access to hot water. However, the report states that summer conditions are particularly challenging due to high temperatures, humidity, and mosquitoes.
Although a room cooler and mosquito repellent are available, they are reportedly insufficient in extreme heat. The absence of a refrigerator was also highlighted, with the cool box sometimes failing to preserve food effectively. Imran Khan reportedly experienced food-related illness during peak summer months.
Security Arrangements
On the security front, the former premier expressed no concerns. Approximately 10 surveillance cameras monitor the compound area, though none are installed inside the cell itself.
Overall, the report indicates that while certain improvements could be made, particularly regarding sanitation and summer conditions, no major security complaints were raised.
