Journalists Demand Repeal of PECA and Improved Working Conditions

Journalists Demand Repeal of PECA at Karachi Gathering

KARACHI: Members of the journalistic community have demanded the immediate repeal of the Pakistan Electronic Crime Act (PECA) and the withdrawal of all cases registered against journalists under the law. The demand was made during a gathering organized by the Karachi Union of Journalists (Dastoor) at the Karachi Press Club, where participants expressed concerns over shrinking space for free expression and increasing job insecurity in the media sector.

The event, titled “Dialogue on Receding Press Freedom and Rising Job Security,” brought together journalists, media professionals, and representatives of press freedom organizations to discuss challenges facing the media industry.

PECA Criticized as a Threat to Press Freedom

Participants adopted a resolution criticizing PECA and calling for its immediate repeal. According to the resolution, the law has been used to restrict media freedom and place additional pressure on journalists.

The gathering noted that assurances had previously been given that PECA would not be used against journalists. However, participants claimed that actions taken under the law have raised concerns within the media community.

The resolution also called for a comprehensive review of PECA to ensure that it is not used for political purposes and demanded the immediate withdrawal of all legal proceedings initiated against journalists under the legislation.

Concerns Over Job Security in Media Industry

Alongside concerns regarding PECA, participants highlighted the growing economic challenges faced by journalists and media workers across the country.

Speakers emphasized the need for media organizations to ensure timely payment of salaries and clear outstanding dues owed to employees. They argued that financial insecurity has become a major challenge for journalists working in an already demanding profession.

The gathering stressed that improving job security is essential for maintaining an independent and professional media environment.

Call for Restoration of Metro TV

Participants also condemned the closure of Metro TV and called for the restoration of the channel. They urged relevant authorities to facilitate employment opportunities for workers who lost their jobs following the closure.

Speakers argued that the financial difficulties faced by media organizations and employees require urgent attention to prevent further job losses within the sector.

Media Leaders Stress Unity and Professional Development

Prominent journalists and media personalities, including Mazhar Abbas and AH Khanzada, addressed the gathering and emphasized the importance of unity among journalist organizations in defending press freedom and protecting professional rights.

They also encouraged media professionals to adopt new skills and embrace emerging technologies, particularly in the digital media sector, to remain competitive in a rapidly changing industry.

Calls for Fair Distribution of Media Revenues

The gathering further criticized media organizations for not adequately sharing the benefits of advertising revenues with media workers. Participants argued that despite substantial advertising earnings, many journalists continue to face financial difficulties.

They stressed that a fair distribution of resources and stronger labor protections are necessary to improve working conditions and ensure the long-term sustainability of the media sector.

Conclusion

The gathering concluded with a renewed call for the repeal of PECA, protection of press freedom, and improved working conditions for journalists. Participants emphasized that a free, independent, and economically secure media is essential for strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring the public’s right to information.
